Welcome back Girl Scout leaders!!
First, I want to acknowledge outgoing Framingham Girl Scouts Town Coordinator Nancy Solomon. I want to thank Nancy for the endless volunteers hours she gave to the service unit and the cooperative attitude she always offered all the leaders. Nancy will still be involved with Framingham Girl Scouts but wanted to focus her efforts on her daughter's Troop at this time. I have agreed to be Town Coordinator, with help from Council. (If you have any ideas or thoughts, please contact me at spetroni@rcn.com.)
1) Many of the Framingham Troops took advantage of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts (GSEM) Spring registration. Troops that have not registered, may pick up their registration packet at Plymouth Church. If you have any questions or issues, please contact our NEW Service Unit (SU) Registrar Mary Ann Sagar at masager5@.... (I want to thank out-going registrar Deb Brisbois for her many years of service.)
2) Troop Coordinator Lauren Fawell will be holding registration for NEW Scouts, leaders, & adult volunteers on:
* Sunday, Oct 3 at 2 p.m. at St. Bridget School
* Monday, Oct 4 at First United Methodist Church at 7 p.m.
Council will be delivering the flyers for the FPS & other schools in town this week. I know a couple of our leaders are involved with the PTOs and it would be much appreciated if you could take the flyers for your school. Please e-mail me if you can pick up and deliver flyers for your school. Distribution will take place on Friday, Sept 17. (Supt office has APPROVED the flyers.)
3) The first Service Unit event will be a Science Try-It & Badge Workshop on Sunday, Oct 3. I will be posting a flyer with details and registration information this week. Mary Ann is chairing the event.
4) There will be a meeting of the SERVICE UNIT TEAM MEMBERS ONLY on Tuesday, Sept 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Plymouth Church.
5) The first Framingham Scout leader (and adult volunteer) meeting will be on Tuesday, Oct 19 at 7 p.m. at Plymouth Church.

MARLBOROUGH — This year marks the end of an era in Marlborough Girl Scouts.
The 10 members of Marlborough Senior Girl Scout Troop #72834, many of whom joined early in elementary school, are graduating. A program at Marlborough High School on May 27 honored the troop and three Gold Award recipients.
The Senior Troop members shared their experiences over the last 13 years. Highlights included community service, camping and a trip in ninth grade to England in which they stayed with the British equivalent of Girl Scouts, said Laura Wilner, one of the troop's leaders.
"So many said this has been such a big part of their life," Wilner said. "This troop has just been so special. They're a very high-achieving group."
Ruth Bramson, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts Council, spoke at the ceremony. The Marlborough Gold Award recipients were Katherine Karwoski and Julianne Wilner, of Troop #72834, and Chelsea Wagner, of Troop #72849. The award, akin to an Eagle Scout accomplishment in Boy Scouts, is the highest honor a Girl Scout can receive - only 5.4 percent of Girl Scouts achieve it.

I hope the Brownies & Juniors, who attended, enjoyed their special day!
While the weatherman was correct & the storm did pass in time and we had sunshine; we unfortunately had giant puddles and lots of mud.
At 4:30 p.m., when we began setting up, one of the dads in the parking lot offered to call the Masonic Hall to see if we could have the ceremony there.
The Troop leaders present, then made a group decision to move inside.
Unfortunately, the Masonic Hall could never have been an option as the Framingham bridging location, because 2 of the Troops requested handicapped accessible halls (one Daisy Troop with a Scout in an 80-pound wheelchair and another Junior Troop with a child in a walker).
After the bridging location was planned outside, due to the fact that no handicapped accessible locations were available on the agreed upon date, that Daisy Troop, with the 80-pound wheelchair Scout, dropped out of the town-wide bridging.
I want to personally thank Mr. Canhoto from Troop 2086 for coming through at the last minute and not disappointing all the Scouts. (Parents, probably will appreciate the non-muddy shoes.)

I know there is a storm now, but according to weather.com it should be passing by 4:15 p.m.
This storm is moving at 55-60 MPH and is suppose to be SEVERE but pass by within 30 minutes.
Worse case scenario we will have to hold off by sitting in cars for a few minutes.
Don't want to diappoint the Scouts, by cancelling.
Radar on weather.com looks like we will have a brief clearing between this storm and then a second storm is expected to hit.
I was afraid by delaying until a 530 or 6 p.m. start that we will be right in the middle of that 2nd storm.
Don't forget to bring umbrellas and bug spray!

Most of the storms are heading towards the Merrimack Valley as opposed to along the mass pike today.

Springfield Overnight Deadline Approaching
Girl Scouts of Central & Western Massachusetts in connection with the Springfield Science Museum is hosting an overnight for Brownies & Junior Scouts on Friday, May 21 from 6 p.m. through Saturday, May 22 at 9 a.m.
Girls will discover a variety of nature and science related information while connecting with sister Girl Scouts and participating in fun, hands on activities.
Girls will sleep beside a coral reef or next to live animals or the Tyrannosaurus.
An evening pizza party and light breakfast is included.
Everyone views the planetarium show and screen prints their own t-shirt.
Girls will complete requirements for a Try It or badge.
The cost of the badge is not included.
Free and secure parking is available.
This event is for groups and individual Scouts, including Juliette Scouts.
Registration fee is $35 per Scout and $30 per leader and adult.
Troops please adhere to safety-wise ratios.
Individual Scouts must attend with an adult.
Registration deadline is May 7 or when 120 people have registered.

Girl Scouts of Central & Western Massachusetts is holding a Food For Thought event at Drumlin farm in Lincoln for Daisy, Brownie, & Junior Scouts on Saturday, May 1. There are 2 sessions 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.
Explore fields, gardens, barns and trails as you discover life on this local farm. Work with Teacher Naturalists as they engage in daily chores and other related activities. Learn how and why we grow and raise what we do and the journey of farm animals and crops to your home. Enjoy a hayride and taste some farm fresh treats!
This program will satisfy requirements towards Try-Its and Badges, but they are not included in the registration fees.
This event is for Troops and individual Scouts. Troops should adhere to safety-wise rules. Individual Scouts must attend with an adult. Juliette Scouts may also register.

Get Real. Listen to exciting tales while walking the Freedom Trail! Explore 13 of 16 stops, guided by an interpreter. Walk away with a patch and a great experience.
Walk ends at Old North Church at about 1 p.m.
Please limit number of adults to minimum required with safety-wise rules.
Registration fee is $16 per Scout and $15 per leader/adult.
Registration deadline is about one week prior to the event.

Calling all Scouts! Spend an adventurous day at the Roger Williams Zoo in Providence, Rhode island with fellow Girl Scouts on Saturday, May 8.
Participate in interactive stations that will help you to complete a variety of badge requirements while you’re surrounded by a zoo full of fascinating animals. Meet special guest presenters, zoo staff and some very cool critters.
Souvenir patch is included!
Registration fee is $14 per Scout. Leaders and adults are $10.
Pre-registration is required and payment is due upon registration.
Registration deadline is April 19. There will be a late fee of $5 per scout after that date.

It's Daisy Scout Day at the Museum of Science Boston on Saturday, May 1 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. This special program is sponsored by the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts Council.
Juliette Scouts in grades K & 1 may also register. This event is for Troops and individual Scouts. Individual Scouts must register with an adult.
PROGRAM: Get Balanced. Do some fun science experiments, make a puppet, take a break for lunch (on your own) then explore the exhibit halls. This program introduces Daisies to science in a fun and interactive way.
Adults are free ONLY at Safety-Wise ratios.
Registration fee is $23 per Scout.
Registration deadline will occur when the maximum number of Scouts have registered or about 2 weeks prior to the event (about April 16)

Dinosaur Dig for Brownies on May 13 at Camp Rice Moody in Reading
Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts Council is offering a Dinosaur Dig program at Camp Rice Moody in Reading on Thursday, May 13 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. for Brownie Scouts. Ice Chips Show Deadline is March, 29
See National, World, & Olympic figure skaters at the Ice Chips show on Saturday, April 10 at 1 p.m. at Harvard University. Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts (GSEM) has partnered with Ice Chips for discounted tickets at just $10. Family members may attend with Scouts.

The afternoon is spent paddling inflatable kayaks, "Funyaks" 8 miles down an easy stretch of the Deerfield River.
Follow-up work at home completes the IP requirements.

PROGRAM: Zoo staff will guide you through an after-hours adventure. Go behind the scenes with an exciting tour that brings you up close and personal with many exotic species. PROGRAM: Learn about grooming, leading, safety, equine behavior, tacking up and more in this half-day workshop at Biscuit Hill Farm in Shelburne. This will be a chance to work towards horse related badges or to just have fun and learn about horses and then get a chance to ride one.
Be sure to wear hard sole shoes.

PROGRAM: Work towards your Horse Sense IP in this super-fun horse program! Scouts will learn horse safety, standard horse etiquette, grooming and leading a horse. Scout also will explore the tack room and learn about the equipment and its care.
IPs can be purchased separately from the council store.
An optional introductory 1/2 hour lesson is also available directly after this program (see Horse Sense Riding Lesson program description).

Plant Life IP Program on Saturday, June 5
Girl Scouts of Central & Western Massachusetts is holding a Plant Life IP Program on Saturday, June 5 at Tower Hill Botanical Gardens in Boylston for Cadette, Senior, & Ambassador Scouts room 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Juliette Scouts in grades 6-12 may register. Troops and individual Scouts may register. Troops should adhere to safety-wise rules. Individual Scouts must attend with adult.
PROGRAM: Explore the world of plants and gardening at Tower Hill Botanic Garden. Find out what you need to start your own garden while you try out different kinds of gardening tools, learn about different soils, garden pests and more. Discover the beauty of nature at Tower Hill through a guided tour and go home with a new plant ... one that wasn’t grown from a seed!
Scouts will complete five of the requirements for the Plant Life Interest Project. The patch will be provided, however you will need to complete additional activities on your own to fully earn the award.

Worcester Swim Overnight on May 29-30

Buttonwood Zoo Overnight program for Brownies on May 15-16
Things that Go Bump in the Night program at the Buttonwood Park zoo in New Bedford for Brownies on Saturday, May 15 at 6 p.m. until Sunday, May 16 at 9 a.m. Sponsored by Girl scouts of Central & Western Massachusetts Council, Juliette Scouts in grades 2 & 3 may also register. Troops and individual Scouts may register. Each Troop must provide a trained over night leader and a first aider. Each Troop must also provide 1 adult for every 5 Scouts. Individual Scout may registers but must attend with a legal guardian.
PROGRAM: Have you ever wondered just what exactly those things that go bump in the night are? Learn about unique creatures of the night and the spectacular ways they are adapted for life under the cover of darkness. Girl Scouts Walk Together Event on April 25
Walk-Together for Fun, Fitness and Friendship on April 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for Brownie, Junior, Cadette, & Senior level Scouts.
The Walk 'n Mass Vokssport Club will be running a Walk Together with Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts Council at Camp Cedar Hill in Waltham. Girl Scouts and their families are invited to walk the 10 km route that will go through our camp. Girls can purchase the AVA Participation Patch for Girl Scout Walks after they have completed a Volksmarch.
If Junior troops, Cadettes, Seniors or Ambassadors are interested in volunteering to help with the Volksmarch please email jvanburen@girlscoutseasternmass.org.

Teams must follow clues and instructions and make their way to checkpoints in places around the city, eventually racing to the finish line! Along the way teams perform tasks that represent the culture and adventures of the city - past and present. Teams will come across obstacles and challenges in the form of road blocks, detours and pit stops. Do you think you have the brains, brawn and street-smarts to win the race? Form your team and become a contestant in the AMAZING RACE!
Teams are made up of girls (with their adult chaperones/drivers), with one vehicle per team. Many teams will enter; only one team will win.

Minimum 8 teams (1 vehicle per team) and no maximums.

Girl Scout Night at CATS
My Brownie Troop is interested in doing Girl Scout Night at CATS.
I'm posting this to see if another Troop might be interested in joining us.
Broadway in Boston is holding a Girl Scout Night for CATS on Thursday, April 15 at the Colonial Theatre. Curtains rise at 7:30 p.m.
**Tickets are $27. (They are in the balcony).
The Scouts (Brownie level and higher) will be eligible for a Broadway Across America Patch for the back of their vest by attending the CATS show, participating in a pre-show event, a Colonial Theatre tour, and a group Girl Scout photo that night.
The pre-show event is a special meeting with the Animal Rescue League of Boston. scouts will talk about ways you can help care for your pet and get involved with the animal community in your own neighborhood.

Happy 98th Birthday Girl Scouts!
Today, join in celebrating the 98th anniversary of Girl Scouts! More than 3 million girls in the United States and more than are discovering their path to leadership through Girl Scouts.
Self-discovery and community service were core values that Girls Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low sought to instill in girls from the earliest days. When the organization was founded in 1912, many girls’ paths in life were limited and Low’s vision was to establish an organization where any American girl could expand her personal horizon by having fun while exploring new interests and contributing to society. Low was determined to help expand opportunities and learning for the average American girl, and founded Girl Scouts on March 12, 1912.

Register for April Vacation Week One-day Camps
Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts Council is offering School vacation week DAY camps for Brownie, Junior & Cadette Scouts on April 20, April 21, April 22, and April 23. Juliette Scouts in grades 2-6 may also register.
You can register your daughter for one day ($40 per day) including bus transportation, from either Brophy or Potter Road elementary or register her for 2, 3, or all 4 days.
