Lowell Spinners Offer Two Scout Night Options
The Lowell Spinners are hosting two Scout Sleepover events this season.
They are:
(#1) Saturday, July 18
(#2) Saturday, August 22
Rain Date: Saturday, August 29
Come down to LeLacheur Park for the opportunity to spend the night with the Lowell Spinners and sleepover night on the field! Back by popular demand The Lowell Spinners have dedicated two nights in honor of the Boys and Girl Scouts of New England.
The gates open at 3:30 p.m. and the game starts at 5 p.m.
Each participating camper receives:
* Ticket to the game
* Official Lowell Spinners Scout Night Patch
* Pre-game recognition on the field
* Food voucher for a hot dog, soda and chips to be used during the game
* Complimentary breakfast the following morning
Other activities include:
Playing catch on the field under the lights
Feature presentation TBD on our state-of-the art video board
This event sells out every year. Only 750 tickets will be sold. Campers are required to bring their own tents and other camping gear. No minimum quantity required and everybody is welcome to participate.

EcoArt Workshop for Daisies & Brownies
Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts is offering a special workshop called EcoArt at Camp Winnetaska in Ashland on Tuesday, April 28 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
This is not a Try-It or a participation patch workshop.
Workshop is open to Daisy and Brownie level.
Workshop description: You can reuse materials in their original form instead of throwing them away. EcoArt will reuse supplies found in homes and in nature to create pieces of art.

Pawtucket Red Sox Game & Sleepover Event for Girl Scouts

The PawSox are playing Indianapolis at 6 p.m.

Girl Scout Night at the Big Apple Circus - April 17th
I got an e-mail from the Big Apple Circus in NYC, which is putting up their big tent in Boston starting on April 4th.
They are offering a special Girl Scout Discount!!!
On Friday, April 17 at the 6:30 p.m. show (this is the start of school vacation week), Scouts and their family members can get a discount ticket to the Circus at just $14 ($28 off the Mezzanine ticket price.)
A minimum of 15 tickets must be ordered to qualify for the $14 rate.
I'm willing to coordinate for my Brownie Troop and other Framingham Scout Troops, so we can all benefit from the group discount rate.

Junior Car Care Badge Workshop Available in Framingham

Dimidis & Sons Auto Service (12 Watson Place in Framingham) would like to offer an educational activity to the Framingham Girl Scouts Troops.
Our Basic Auto Repair workshop would be perfect for Scouts ages 8 and up who want to learn the basics of auto care and fulfill the requirements for the Car Care Badge (Junior Scouts).
In this one hour activity at our garage, we will:
* Identify major parts under the hood/importance of changing fluids regularly
* Tire safety/tire pressure check
* Identify gauges and dials on dashboard and importance of each
* Safety/Emergency items to have on hand– getting car ready for summer or winter
* Job training/typical work day for an auto technician
* Technological advances/environmental concerns/recycling
We are happy to offer this as a FREE activity for Framingham troops.
Because of space limitation and the nature of the event we would request a limit of 20 people including chaperones.

Scout Safari Day at Roger Williams Zoo on April 25
Girl Scouts of Rhode Island and Roger Williams Zoo in Providence are hosting a Scout Safari Day
on Saturday, April 25 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Spend an adventurous day at this Providence, R.I., Zoo with fellow Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of all ages.
Scouts can participate in interactive stations that will help you to complete a variety of badge requirements, while surrounded by a zoo full of fascinating animals. Meet special guest presenters, Zoo staff, and some very cool critters.
Cost: $12/Scout (includes admission and program fee; does not include lunch).
Non-participants: $5/children, $10/adults (admission only).
The $5 non-Scout admission means that siblings will not be allowed to participate in any of the special programs and interactive stations.

Special Council Event: Theatre Workshop & Performance of Charlotte's Web by Wheelock Family Theatre on April 11
Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts has partnered with Wheelock Family Theatre in Boston for a special performance of Charlotte's Web. E. B. White's inspired tale celebrates a friendship that transcends differences. First published in 1957, Charlotte’s Web is for all generations.
On Saturday, April 11, Brownie & Junior Girl Scouts are invited between 1:45-2:30, before the 3 p.m. performance, to participate in a drama workshop.
Think about character, place, and story. How does an actor choose a movement, a look, or a sound? How does a designer build a world onstage? Scouts will be introduced to the theatrical choices artists make when creating a performance, and this in turn will illuminate the performance they are about to see.
After the show, stay for a question and answer period with the cast and crew! (an additional 30 minutes)
NOTE: Leaders are required to attend with their troop; you can only bring the required Safety-Wise ratios of: 2 adults for the first 5 scouts, & 1 for each additional 5 scouts. First Aider is required.
Cost is $22 per Scout and $22 per leader/adult.
Cost of the ticket includes the pre-show, post Q&A, and the actual performance.

The event is open to Girl Scouts in grades first through 12th.
(It is about a 75 to 90 minute drive from Framingham to Holyoke.)
Event info: Discover what life was like in the last 1800's by exploring a Victorian mansion. Experience daily Victorian life in hands-on segments. A sampling of activities includes Victorian fashion and hairstyles, the language and decoration of fans, garden and outdoor games, letter writing and diary passages, Victorian etiquette and entertainment, calling cards, and Victorian crafts.
Girl Scouts will be divided into small groups to travel through the museum.

Booth Sale Opportunity: Sell Girl Scout Cookies at Natick Service plaza on MassPike
Exciting news!! Girl Scouts have been invited to have cookie booth sales at the Natick Service Plaza on the Eastbound MassPike for the next three weekends!
These dates will be assigned as part of the council-organized booth sale program, and will be filled on a first-come, first served basis.
Details: Booth Sale shifts are available from 10am-3pm on the following days:
Saturday March 14, 21, and 28
Sunday March 15 and 22
Troops will be able to set up by one or both entrances to the Natick Service Plaza on the eastbound side of the Mass Turnpike.
You may set up right outside the doors if the weather is nice, or just inside if it is inclement. Please do not block entrance/exit doors and keep all personal belongings secured and out of the way of traffic (both pedestrian and vehicular).
If you would like to reserve a spot, please e-mail cookieboothsale@girlscoutseasternmass.org with your troop number, requested date(s), and troop contact name, e-mail, and phone number. Please provide alternate dates if possible.

NEW COUNCIL Requirements for Troop Camper and Troop First Aider
FROM GSEM COUNCIL:
Beginning September 1, 2009, troops will be required to have separate adults as First Aider and Troop Camper on while camping.
For safety reasons, GSEM is urging Troops to comply with this now.
At encampments, please consider sharing certified adults among troops if you do not have an adult for a position in your troop.
First Aiders will focus on attending to sick or injured children, while Troop Campers are continue the camp program safely with the rest of the girls.
See Basic Troop Camping and First Aid training dates.

IT's YOUR WORLD - CHANGE IT! --- Facts on the New Girl Scout Leadership Journeys
Girl Scouts USA (GSUSA) has unveiled a series of Leadership Journeys for Girl Scouts. Each Journey is a coordinated series of activities grouped around a single theme and delivered over a period of time.
**Each journey is tied to some of Girl Scouts' 15 national outcomes for girls, as defined in the Girl Scout Leadership Model.
**These outcomes are integral to the three leadership keys - Discover, Connect & Take Action.
** GSUSA unveiled one leadership journey for each grade level.
** These initial journeys invite girls to explore a specific leadership theme for their level.

WAGGGS Pin Ceremony
I looked through My Girl Scout bin after the discussion at Tuesday's leader meeting and I found this handout on WAGGGS Pin Ceremonies that I received during training.
It is posted below so Troop leaders can do with their girls...

This ceremony, which can be used on Thinking Day or during national Girl Scout Week, is a nice way to explain the meaning of the WAGGGS pin to new Girl Scouts.
To do this ceremony, you'll need:
felt cutout of the WAGGGS pin, which one can make from blue and yellow felt.
a large yellow circle
a slightly smaller blue circle (so that when you put the blue circle on top of the yellow circle, there's the yellow border outside of it)
yellow felt cutouts of the trefoil and the fire symbol at the base of the trefoil, the two stars and the compass needle.

To start: All participants stand in a horseshoe.
Somewhere, have a table or felt board available for the construction of the pin as the ceremony proceeds.
Leader: The horseshoe formation symbolizes the open friendship circle. In the open end of the horseshoe stand our sister Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world. If they were actually here, our horseshoe would become a completed circle, having no beginning or end.
Series of Q&As
As the questions are asked, have a Scout come forward and place the part of the pin they asked about on the felt board.
What is the world pin?
It is the pin of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. We are going to construct such a pin. As we do, let us consider very carefully the reason for its color and design. Then we will know how deep a feeling of international friendship it can inspire in it.
What does the gold circle around the edge stand for?
The gold band surrounding our pin symbolizes the sun that shines on children all over the world.
Why is the world pin blue?
The blue background symbolizes the sky above us, all over the world.
Why do we have a trefoil in the World pin?
The gold trefoil is the sign of Girl Scouting and Girl Guiding around the world. The 3 parts of the trefoil stand for the 3 parts of the Promise.
There are 2 stars on the World pin. What does the left star stand for?
The star on the left, the same side as our heart, stands for the pledge that all Girl Scouts and Girl Guides try, on their honor, to keep: the Promise.
What does the other star stand for?
The right star, on the side of a helping hand, stands for the Girl Guide and Girl Scout code of conduct--the GG/GS Law.
What does the pointer in the middle stand for?
We place a compass needle in the center, to serve as a guide pointing towards the right way in life.
What does the base of the trefoil mean?

**New Leader Investiture Ceremony: held tonight, 3 new leaders were in attendance, after a short ceremony that Nancy prepared they received their Girl Scout and WAGGGS pins Congratulations and Welcome! Special thank you to Nancy for preparing such a thoughtful ceremony.
**Troop folders at the Plymouth Church: reminder that each troop has a folder in the box located at the bottom of the stairs at the church. The following troops have items in their folders =
2076, 2077, 2081 = girl and adult member cards
2140 = roller skating patches
2148, 2172 = card for one free admission to town sponsored event
2161, 2164 = Early Bird patches and card for one free admission to town sponsored event
2122 = Early Bird patches

Membership groups for Girl Scouts will be:
Grades K-1: Girl Scout Daisy
Grades 2-3: Girl Scout Brownie
Grades 4-5: Girl Scout Junior
Grades 6-8: Girl Scout Cadette
Grades 9-10: Girl Scout Senior
Grades 11-12: Girl Scout Ambassador
Mixed Troops are permitted.
For example, a troop this year with 4th & 5th grade Juniors, next year could be a mixed Troop of 5th grade Juniors and 6th grade Cadettes.
If anyone has any questions in relationship to bridging and Troop levels, please post on the Yahoo leader group or contact Council.

Slot B Bowling Time period Filling Up
The second time slot for the Framingham-wide Me and My Pal Bowling Event on Saturday, March 7 is filling up quickly.
I have received payment and registrations from the following troops:
2125 = Mary Ann Sager - Cadettes - slot A
2134 = Nancy Solomon - Cadettes - slot B
2086 = Natasha Ashe - Brownies - slot B
2102 = Allison Nelson - Brownies - slot B
2148 = Patty Hebert - Juniors - slot B
2147 = Pam O'Callaghan - Juniors - slot B
2082 = Pam O'Callaghan - Brownies - slot B
All above leaders were sent an e-mail confirming their time slots.
Remaining openings as follows:
Time slot A = 12:45-2:15 = 94 openings
Time slot B = 2:15-3:45 = 22 openings
Time slots are assigned at a first come first serve basis
I must have payment to confirm the time slot.
The deadline for registering for the event is this Wed, March 4th.
There is a leader meeting this Tuesday, March 3rd and I will be there if you would like to hand me your registration and payment.
