RE: Fundraising for Haiti Earthquake Relief Efforts

The outpouring of support for the people of Haiti in the wake of the devastating earthquake last week has been remarkable, and Girl Scouts across the country have pitched in to help in many different ways. We know, however, that after natural disasters like these, sending funds is often the best way to help.
Given the catastrophic events in Haiti, the Executive Committee unanimously adopted, and the National Board this morning ratified, the following:
THAT the Executive Committee of Girl Scouts of the USA's National Board of Directors, on the National Board's behalf, adopts a special rule of order to allow girl members to engage in activities, which may include the direct solicitation of money, from January 14 through September 8, 2010, to support emergency relief for the January 12 earthquake disaster in Haiti. Monies raised shall be contributed only to organizations on the approved list of agencies (listed below); additions to the list shall be approved by the National President and CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA.
This now makes it possible for our girls to raise much needed funds for relief efforts in Haiti. Please take note that the money our girls raise can be contributed only to those agencies on the list below.
Much of Haiti is in ruins and a second major earthquake struck the country on Wednesday. The loss of life and suffering has been heartbreaking. I hope that this action by the National Board will serve as yet another opportunity for all of us as a Movement to do what we can to help the people of Haiti in their time of need.

* The American Red Cross: The American Red Cross is accepting donations through its International Response Fund.
* Pan American Development Foundation: The foundation is encouraging people to donate through its website at www.PanAmericanRelief.org.
*UNICEF: UNICEF requests donations for relief for children in Haiti via their Haiti Earthquake Fund. You can also call 1-800-4UNICEF.
* Oxfam: You can donate to online at Oxfam America at www.oxfamamerica.org.
* Save The Children: Save the Children has launched an emergency relief effort for Haiti. Donate to Save the Children.
* Mercy Corps: Donate online, call 1-888-256-1900 or send checks to:
Mercy Corps Haiti Earthquake Fund, Dept NR, PO Box 2669, Portland, OR 97208
* Doctors Without Borders: Doctors Without Borders has set up clinics to treat people in Haiti. Donate to Doctors Without Borders.
* The UN World Food Programme: The UN World Food Programme is gathering all available resources to deliver food to the recently homeless and impoverished in Haiti. Donations can be made through www.wfp.org/donate/haiti
* CARE: CARE is deploying emergency team members to Port-au-Prince to assist in recovery efforts. It's focusing its efforts on rescuing children who may still be trapped in schools that collapsed. Donate to CARE.
* The International Rescue Committee: The International Rescue Committee is deploying an emergency response team to Haiti. Donate to the IRC Haiti Crisis Fund.
* World Vision: World Vision has more 370 staff members in the Haiti. Donate to World Vision.
* United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF): This fund is used for emergencies like the earthquake in Haiti. Donate online.

Service Unit Minutes from 1.12.10

* COOKIES: Cookie Chair = Helena at helenasic@... She is having trouble securing a "drop off site" for cookies this year and would appreciate any suggestions. If we can not get one, we will need to do a "trailer drop." A truck comes to a specified parking lot and the town has ONE hour to have each Troop pull up, off-load their own cookies, have them checked and then drive off. It would require that ALL troops send a representative during this small window of time (the delivery company picks the time not us)

* Council Monthly newsletter sign-up: Go to GSEM Web site. Go to the bottom of the home page and look for รข "sign-up for E newsletter" and follow the prompts
* Susan is keeping the Framingham Service Unit's Web site updated with new programs
* Camp brochures available in next couple of weeks
* Cookie Creations: An adult fundraiser to support GSEM, anyone may attend (not limited to GS), local chefs "whip up" an original creation using one of the eight varieties of GS cookies, Celebrity Judges will determine "Best Overall Dessert" and attendees will choose the "Crowd Favorite." complimentary appetizers, cash bar, silent auction, and raffle drawing. Tickets are $30 each or 2 for $50, RSVP: www.girlscoutseasternmass.org or 857-453-5336.
* Thurs, Jan 21 from 6-8pm at Hawthorne Hotel, Salem
* Thurs, Jan 28 from 6-8pm at The Fairmont Copley Plaza, Boston
* Hanscom Air Force Base: Date correction = March 6: If your Troop is going and is willing to bring other cookie donations from our town please post this offer on Yahoo with specifics (i.e. date, time, and location to bring cookies)

A. Girl Scout Sunday: St Bridget Church will host a Mass on Sunday, March 7 at 9 a.m.
Note: If any Troop is organizing another GS Sunday Mass at your church feel free to post the details on Yahoo and send to this Web site.
B. Girl Scout Bowling: Fairways, Natick Saturday, March 6 More details to come.
C. Town Bridging: If there is enough interest we will hold this event in May or June, watch for more info

Booth Sale Opportunity: Sell Girl Scout Cookies at Natick Service plaza on MassPike
Exciting news!! Girl Scouts have been invited to have cookie booth sales at the Natick Service Plaza on the Eastbound MassPike for the next three weekends!
These dates will be assigned as part of the council-organized booth sale program, and will be filled on a first-come, first served basis.
Details: Booth Sale shifts are available from 10am-3pm on the following days:
Saturday March 14, 21, and 28
Sunday March 15 and 22
Troops will be able to set up by one or both entrances to the Natick Service Plaza on the eastbound side of the Mass Turnpike.
You may set up right outside the doors if the weather is nice, or just inside if it is inclement. Please do not block entrance/exit doors and keep all personal belongings secured and out of the way of traffic (both pedestrian and vehicular).
If you would like to reserve a spot, please e-mail cookieboothsale@girlscoutseasternmass.org with your troop number, requested date(s), and troop contact name, e-mail, and phone number. Please provide alternate dates if possible.

SERVICE UNIT NEWS:
Weather Cancellations: If the Town of Framingham activities/schools are canceled the day of a meeting then the meeting will also be canceled. If the weather looks poor or there is a weather advisory please look for an announcement from the Leader Yahoo group – we will post by 6pm the day of the meeting.
Cookies: Questions/concerns should be addressed to Helena,. Delivery date is scheduled for tomorrow, Feb 10 at St George Hall. Helena sent out an e-mail requesting your troop’s preferred scheduled pick up time – if you have not responded please do so ASAP, remember “many hands make for light work” any volunteers that sign up to help that morning will be able to take their cookies first
Bridging: Discussion on Bridging to be held at the next leader meeting (March). We will ask a Council representative to attend and explain any new criteria/suggestions for Bridging in light of the newly instituted Girl Scout levels
Girl Scout Sunday (See previous post on these events): Two options in town this year. PLEASE contact the person listed below for the program you are interested in with your request to have girls participate as = Altar Servers, Readers, Gift Bearers, and Door Greeters, also with your troop number and an estimated girl count to have a reserved pew

Registration deadline is March 4.
The price had to be increased this year due to increase in bowling fees, still a deal at $7.50 per girl (includes patch) and $6 per pal.
Contact person is Mary Ann at masager5@... anyone interested in helping at the event please contact Mary Ann.

This is a good time to say thank you to those in the community who help make your troop a success (i.e. those who helped with your meeting location, volunteers who have come to your meetings to help, etc.).
A suggestion is for your girls to write thank you cards/letters/posters or give gifts of Girl Scout cookies, etc.

SALE EXTENDED THROUGH MARCH 31!
Because of inclement weather in January, the first few weeks of the cookie sale were challenging. We have extended the sale to give everybody a chance to sell in better weather.
Book another booth sale, and the girls can go back out with order cards.
Make reservations in QuickBase, then go to any cupboard to pick up the cookies.
You can keep booth sale cookies for up to a week now, so you have time to create more opportunities to sell out.
The final payment date is now April 2.

Cookie sale time is now through January 16th: During this time your daughter may sell to family, friends, neighbors, team mates, teachers, your coworkers etc...

When your daughter sells in person remember:
* Always have adult supervision. Be safe!
* One box of cookies is $4
* Money is due upon DELIVERY of cookies, not at time of sale
* Wear your vest over your jacket to show that you are a Girl Scout - and proud of it!
* Troop earns $.60 per box sold.
* Self confidence is developed as girls practice selling cookies to familiar adults.

Why sell Girl Scout Cookies?
Girls can earn the 2009 Cookie Activity Pin to wear on your vest.
Other cookie sale incentive prizes include: bracelet kit, plush pony, t-shirt, and more!
Troop Award: When every girl in a troop sells at least 12 boxes of cookies the troop will earn a special Troop Journal scrapbook.
Cookies are expected to arrive in early February
Money is due in mid-March
