Welcome to the start of another Girl Scout year!

Welcome back Girl Scout leaders!!

First, I want to acknowledge outgoing Framingham Girl Scouts Town Coordinator Nancy Solomon. I want to thank Nancy for the endless volunteers hours she gave to the service unit and the cooperative attitude she always offered all the leaders. Nancy will still be involved with Framingham Girl Scouts but wanted to focus her efforts on her daughter's Troop at this time. I have agreed to be Town Coordinator, with help from Council. (If you have any ideas or thoughts, please contact me at spetroni@rcn.com.)

1) Many of the Framingham Troops took advantage of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts (GSEM) Spring registration. Troops that have not registered, may pick up their registration packet at Plymouth Church. If you have any questions or issues, please contact our NEW Service Unit (SU) Registrar Mary Ann Sagar at masager5@.... (I want to thank out-going registrar Deb Brisbois for her many years of service.)

2) Troop Coordinator Lauren Fawell will be holding registration for NEW Scouts, leaders, & adult volunteers on:

* Sunday, Oct 3 at 2 p.m. at St. Bridget School

* Monday, Oct 4 at First United Methodist Church at 7 p.m.

Council will be delivering the flyers for the FPS & other schools in town this week. I know a couple of our leaders are involved with the PTOs and it would be much appreciated if you could take the flyers for your school. Please e-mail me if you can pick up and deliver flyers for your school. Distribution will take place on Friday, Sept 17. (Supt office has APPROVED the flyers.)

3) The first Service Unit event will be a Science Try-It & Badge Workshop on Sunday, Oct 3. I will be posting a flyer with details and registration information this week. Mary Ann is chairing the event.

4) There will be a meeting of the SERVICE UNIT TEAM MEMBERS ONLY on Tuesday, Sept 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Plymouth Church.

5) The first Framingham Scout leader (and adult volunteer) meeting will be on Tuesday, Oct 19 at 7 p.m. at Plymouth Church.

* COOKIES: Cookie Chair = Helena at helenasic@... She is having trouble securing a "drop off site" for cookies this year and would appreciate any suggestions. If we can not get one, we will need to do a "trailer drop." A truck comes to a specified parking lot and the town has ONE hour to have each Troop pull up, off-load their own cookies, have them checked and then drive off. It would require that ALL troops send a representative during this small window of time (the delivery company picks the time not us)
* Council Updates: by Nancy Pollock = npollock@...
* Council Monthly newsletter sign-up: Go to GSEM Web site. Go to the bottom of the home page and look for รข "sign-up for E newsletter" and follow the prompts
* Susan is keeping the Framingham Service Unit's Web site updated with new programs
* Camp brochures available in next couple of weeks
* Cookie Creations: An adult fundraiser to support GSEM, anyone may attend (not limited to GS), local chefs "whip up" an original creation using one of the eight varieties of GS cookies, Celebrity Judges will determine "Best Overall Dessert" and attendees will choose the "Crowd Favorite." complimentary appetizers, cash bar, silent auction, and raffle drawing. Tickets are $30 each or 2 for $50, RSVP: www.girlscoutseasternmass.org or 857-453-5336.
* Thurs, Jan 21 from 6-8pm at Hawthorne Hotel, Salem
* Thurs, Jan 28 from 6-8pm at The Fairmont Copley Plaza, Boston

Service Unit/Leader/Adult Volunteer Meeting Date Changed to Jan. 12th

Just wanted to let you all know that the date of our January 2010 meeting
has been moved from Tuesday, an. 5th to the following Tuesday, Jan. 12th (still
7-9 p.m.).
Apparently there are plans to unveil a school-wide redistricting
plan (with a goal of implementing elementary school changes in Sept. 2010) at
the School Committee meeting on Tuesday,
Jan. 5th --- and we feel many of our meeting attendees might want to go to that
meeting instead.
Hope to see you at the January 12th meeting.

Next meeting: Nov 4:
Agenda to include: Leader e-mail list available, leader documentation review

October 7th: 12 leaders/volunteers present

Town-wide Encampment: event held Sept 19-21 at Camp Cedar Hill, Waltham – fabulous weather, about 80 girls from 10 troops went, Brownies earned “Art to Wear” and “Safety First” Try-Its; Juniors earned “Art to Wear” and “First Aid” badges, all girls received an encampment patch – HUGE thank you to Helena for organizing and running such a successful weekend event!
Spring Registration: Early Bird patches – we are having trouble locating the patches, once they are located we will put them in the troop folders at the church and send out an e-mail. Each troop that registered in the spring also earned a “one free admission to Town Sponsored Event” coupon which was given out at the meeting or placed in your folder.

Free Swap Night – at the meeting, lots of goodies were displayed and leaders helped themselves, we will do it again at a future meeting

Oct. 5 Science and Voting Workshop – 72 girls from 10 troops participated in the event, the Brownies earned their “Science in Action” Try-it and the Juniors earned their “Science Discovery” badge, all girls earned the “I Promised a Girl Scout I’d Vote” patch and all girls attending received a GS Science Fun patch, the girls had a great time and Valerie Mulvey from the town’s clerk office was wonderful!

Girl Scout Levels – the council is in the process of reassigning Girl Scout levels as per the direction of Girl Scouts USA, we have been told that this is an “adjustment year” and the current troops may choose to use the old or new level rules.
The new levels are:
Daisy = Kindergarten and 1st Grade
Brownie = 2nd and 3rd Grade
Junior = 4th and 5th Grade
Cadette = 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade
Senior = 9th and 10th Grade
