OSV Scout Day: “The Legend of Sleepy HollowLives on … in 1830”

This fall event is for Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and their families who want to learn about America’s past. It was in 1820 that Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was first published, thrilling audiences with its mystery, action, and horror! This ghoulish short story tells the tale of a Hessian soldier who comes back to haunt a small rural community while looking for the head that he lost during a Revolutionary War battle.
Learn about this tale and its time through storytelling, demonstrations and hands-on activities.

Cost: $7 per Scout ($10 includes patch) $7 per Leader and adult volunteer (NOTE: only 1 adult per Scout. Additional adults are $20.)

Freedom Trail Event on Saturday, May 1
Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts is holding a Walk into History - Boston Freedom Trail event for Brownie through Ambassador Scout levels on Saturday, May 1.
The event begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Boston Common Visitor Center, at 128 Tremont Street. Juliette Scouts and individual scouts may also register, if an adult attends with them.
Get Real. Listen to exciting tales while walking the Freedom Trail! Explore 13 of 16 stops, guided by an interpreter. Walk away with a patch and a great experience.
Walk ends at Old North Church at about 1 p.m.
Please limit number of adults to minimum required with safety-wise rules.
Registration fee is $16 per Scout and $15 per leader/adult.
Registration deadline is about one week prior to the event.
To register, visit the GSEM Web site, click on programs. Fill out the online registration form, and pre-pay with a credit card.

Old Sturbridge Village Hosts Girl Scout Day on March 27
Many of the Try-It workshops, Badge Workshops, and other workshops have sold out, but Girl Scouts can still register up until Friday, March 26 for the special reduced admission price of just $7.
Girl Scout Day is for Girl Scouts of all ages who are interested in learning more about multi-culturalism in New England in the early 19th century. Learn about how minority women paved a way for themselves and those after them. Meet Molly Geet, a Native American Doctress; Mumbet, a slave who fought for her freedom in the Massachusetts court system and won; and Mary Culligan, an Irish Immigrant and hired-hand.
Also, inspired by Women's History Month, girls can explore the everyday lives of girls and women through demonstrations and performances! Visit the animals and the costumed Villagers throughout the Countryside and the Center Village.
If time permits, consider making a quick craft in the Hands-on Crafts Center at $5-10 per activity - first come, first served; some age and safety restrictions apply.

Seuss on the Loose Program on Saturday, May 1 for Daisy Scouts at Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden
Girl Scouts of Central & Western Massachusetts Council is hosting a Seuss on the Loose Program for Daisy Scouts at the Springfield Museums and Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden on Saturday, May 01, from 1 to 4 p.m. Juliette Scouts in grades K & 1 may also register.
Program: Dr. Seuss is known for creating many silly characters; but in telling their tales he improved the world in which we live. Issues like protecting the environment (The Lorax), bullying and self-image (The Sneetches) are still important today.
The afternoon will consist of Seussian art activities, story time and scavenger hunts exploring the Seuss exhibit galleries as well as the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden.
It will be a fun and silly afternoon with a significant message for girls.
Dress for the weather.
Daisy Scouts will receive a participation patch.

Nautical Nights at Battleship Cove on April 9-10
Girl Scouts of Central & Western Massachusetts is hosting a Nautical Nights at Battleship Cove in Fall River on Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10 for Junior, Cadette, Senior, & Ambassador Scouts. Juliette Scouts in grades 4-12 may also register.

Program: Bunk in crew's quarters aboard the U.S.S. Massachusetts, a WWII battleship or the U.S.S. Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., a destroyer, just like the sailors did! Learn to tie knots, take More Code classes, participate in flag-folding presentations, story-telling and historical re-enactments. Feature films will be shown on board Big Mamie.
Scouts will have a full, nutritious dinner, breakfast, and box lunch served in the battleship's Officer's Wardroom. Scouts also receive free admission to the Marine Museum.
Troops and individual Scouts may register. Safety-wise rules apply for Troops. Individual Scouts may attend with an adult.

Wistariahurst Museum Hosts Girl Scout Victorian Era Day on April 22
Girl Scouts of Central & Western Massachusetts and the Wistariahurst mansion in Holyoke have teamed up to host Girl Scout Victorian Era Day for Brownie, Junior, Cadette, Senior, & Ambassador Scouts during April school vacation week on Thursday, April 22 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Individual Scouts and Juliette Scouts in grades 2-12 may also register
Event: Imagine! Fun for all ages as girls learn about and 'live' an era gone by in beautiful Wistariahurst, a Victorian mansion. Girls will discover what life was like in the late 1800s, while participating in a variety of hands-on activities. They will learn and live Victorian fashion, hair styles, outdoor games, letter writing, decorating and more.

Pilgrim Program for Cadette, Senior & Ambassador Scouts on March 6
1620: Did young women in 17th century New England have the same responsibilities and opportunities that they do today? How did native and colonial girls transition to womanhood? Meet a 17th-century colonial woman, cook colonial foods over an open hearth, learn a colonial dance and make a wampum pendant from quahog shell. A special part of the day will help girls grow on the inside, by discussing cultural and racial stereotypes (like those about Native People) in our everyday lives. Led by one of the museum’s Native staff members, girls will brainstorm how they can raise awareness of and take action against stereotypes in their communities.
Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts & Plimouth Planatation is co-sponsoring this special program for Cadette, Senior, & Ambassador level Scouts on Saturday, March 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Your day starts with a presentation in the auditorium and then it's off to do some hands-on learning...take a tour, learn a dance, do a craft and have fun earning your exclusive Council Medieval Maidens Try-It.
Cost is $15 per Brownie or Juliette Scout in grades 2 or 3.
$8 fee for leaders and or adult volunteers.

Council Brownie Event: Plimoth Plantation Overnight Nov. 14-15
Plimoth Plantation's 17th Century Overnight: Get Smart. Families will enjoy this unique overnight experience! Visit Plimoth Plantation’s Wampanoag Homesite and English Village where girls explore the museum’s famous living history sites and interact with our Native interpreters and Pilgrim role players. Then continue with a taste of history as girls enjoy a delicious bicultural dinner.
Upon registrations you will receive information about meals, the itinerary, and sleeping arrangements.
Families are welcome.

School Vacation Week Event: Victorian Day in Holyoke
Girls Scouts of Central & Western Massachusetts Council and the Wistariahurst Museum in Holyoke is offering a special Victorian Era Day event for Girl Scouts during School vacation week on Thursday, April 23 from 9:30 a.m. to noon.
The event is open to Girl Scouts in grades first through 12th.
(It is about a 75 to 90 minute drive from Framingham to Holyoke.)
Event info: Discover what life was like in the last 1800's by exploring a Victorian mansion. Experience daily Victorian life in hands-on segments. A sampling of activities includes Victorian fashion and hairstyles, the language and decoration of fans, garden and outdoor games, letter writing and diary passages, Victorian etiquette and entertainment, calling cards, and Victorian crafts.
Girl Scouts will be divided into small groups to travel through the museum.
